Become an activist and help break the cycle of slavery. Slavery exists around the world in a variety of forms. There are many things you can do to help rescue slaves and end this prolific human rights abuse.

Slavery is a largely covert enterprise and it exists all over the world. Slaves may be held within your own community without your knowledge. Cases have of slavery have emerged in urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout the world, even in the United States. The US Department of Health and Human Services has asked Americans to look for the following warning signs. If you suspect someone is being held as a slave, call your local law enforcement officials.
- Evidence of being controlled
- Evidence of inability to move or leave job
- Signs of physical abuse
- Fear or depression
- Non-English speaking
- Absence of identification documents

Nivasa is a small non-profit that relies on volunteers to carry out its programming and grow the organization. Volunteers have contributed in a number of ways, including offering web design and computer programming expertise, helping to coordinate events, and assisting with our public relations and press work. If you would like to volunteer for Nivasa or are interested in organizing a one-time event on behalf of Nivasa, please contact us at 617-996-9050 or info@nivasafoundation.org.

Starting a local Nivasa chapter is one of the best ways to become active and contribute to our organization. You can create a Nivasa chapter at your elementary school, high school, or university; church, synagogue, or mosque; or for your community, be it at a civic center, an online community, or amongst your friends and family. Click here to download our chapter guide.

By helping Nivasa raise funds, you can help us grow and support our programs, enabling Nivasa to provide for the children of victims of slavery in Sri Lanka and prevent mothers from putting themselves in danger of enslavement. Fundraising is an important and necessary part of ensuring the continuation and success of our Sponsor-a-Child and other programs. Click here to download our fundraising guide.

The Nivasa Foundation is one of the few non-profit organizations in which almost all of the funds donated are used for programming. There are several ways to donate.
- One time donation: You can give a one-time donation to Nivasa for our general operating fund. This money will be used to support our website, printed materials, events, and one-time donations to other anti-trafficking programs in Sri Lanka. You can also make a one-time donation to our Sponsor a Child program, temporarily providing a Sri Lankan child whose mother is a victim of human trafficking with basic needs. This includes food, clothing, and support for their education. A donation of $450 will support one child for an entire year.
- Monthly donation: A monthly donation of just $37.50 will support one child’s needs every month. If you choose to sponsor a child, you will receive updates on your sponsored child’s progress in school and at home, as well as how your donation has improved his/her family’s life. You will also receive personal letters from your sponsored child and will have the opportunity to send letters to them as well. You may choose to send birthday and/or holiday gifts, as well as school or clothing supplies. You control the level of interaction you have with your sponsored child.

Simply by visiting our website you already know more about modern day slavery than most of the world. This general lack of education is perhaps the greatest obstacle to ending slavery. You can help remedy the problem by further educating yourself and others about slavery. Inviting a speaker to your community, organizing a book signing, writing an op-ed in a local paper, sending out an e-mail blast with a link to the Nivasa Foundation, or coordinating an educational event are great ways to educate others.

Thank You!
Our deepest appreciation goes out to all those who generously donated to help Nimesha's family cover the cost of her operation. We are so glad to report that Nimesha has recovered from a very successful surgery and is now undergoing physical therapy to enable her to walk normally for the first time. Our special thanks to Cora for sponsoring Nimesha and financing a large portion of her medical fee. Together, we have given a young girl and her family the precious gift of health, hope, and happiness!
